Sulbutiamine is a synthetic derivative of thiamine also name Vitamin B1. As a dimer of twomodified thiamine molecules, it is a lipophilic compound that easier to cross the blood-brain barrier than thiamine and increases the levels of thiamine and thiamine phosphate esters in the brain.

Sulbutiamine was discovered in Japan to develop more useful thiamine derivatives because it is desirable to improve lipophilicity properties of thiamine to produce in better pharmacokinetic properties.
