Doxorubicin hydrochloride, also name Hydroxydaunorubicin hydrochloride, is a cytotoxic anthracycline antibiotic, is an anti-cancer chemotherapy agent. Doxorubicin hydrochloride is an effective human DNA topoisomerase I and topoisomerase II inhibitor with IC50s of 0.8 μM and 2.67 μM, respectively, Doxorubicin hydrochloride reduces basal phosphorylation of AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase. Doxorubicin hydrochloride induces apoptosis and autophagy.

Doxorubicin hydrochloride is used to produce regression in disseminated neoplastic conditions like acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, neuroblastoma, wilms’ tumor, soft tissue and bone sarcomas, ovarian carcinoma, breast carcinoma, transitional cell bladder carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, Hodgkin’s disease, gastric carcinoma, malignant lymphoma and bronchogenic carcinoma in which the small cell histologic type is the most responsive compared to other cell types. 

Doxorubicin hydrochloride can also indicated for use as a component of adjuvant therapy for women with evidence of axillary lymph node involvement following resection of primary breast cancer.
