Pantethine (D-Pantethine) is an amide form compound of panithic acid, and a more effective form of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), it is white or quasi white color with good fluid granule. Pantethine (bis-pantethine or co-enzyme pantethine) is a dimeric form of pantetheine, which is produced from pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) by the addition of cysteamine. Pantethine is composed of two molecules of pantetheine linked by a bridging disulfide. Pantetheine is an intermediate in the production of Coenzyme A by the body.

Pantethine is used for lowering cholesterol, preventing inflammation, boosting the activity of the immune system, treating an inherited condition called cystinosis, treating gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, and improving athletic performance. It is also used for improving energy, lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke, improving adrenal function, protecting against mental and physical stress, and preventing allergy symptoms in people who are allergic to formaldehyde.

Function

Panthionamine is a pan-acid analogue, a precursor of Coenzyme A, which has the effect of improving lipid metabolism and lowering triglycerides and cholesterol, and its pharmacological effects are as follows:

(1) Cholesterol levels are reduced mainly by increasing the breakdown of cholesterol in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL).

(2) By increasing the synthesis of lipoprotein A-I and enhancing the activity of histoglobinase, VLDL is converted into high-density lipoprotein (HDL), thus increasing the HDL content.

(3) It can also accelerate the β-oxidation process of fatty acids in the liver and arterial walls, prevent cholesterol deposition in arterial walls, and promote the production of adrenal corticosteroids, promote intestinal peristalsis, anti-platelet aggregation. Animal experiments have shown that it can promote the normal metabolism of blood lipids, improve toxic liver damage in fatty liver and alcohol, inhibit the formation of lipid peroxide and platelet aggregation. It also prevents cholesterol from depositing in the walls of blood vessels.
