Alpha Lipoic acid, also known as α-lipoic acid, alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and thioctic acid is an organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid. ALA is made in animals normally, and is essential for aerobic metabolism.

Alpha Lipoic acid is a coenzyme found in mitochondria, similar to vitamins, which can eliminates free radicals that cause accelerated aging and disease. Alpha lipoic acid enters cells after absorbed through the intestinal tract in the body and has both lipid-soluble and water-soluble properties.

Alpha lipoic acid is a light yellow powder, almost odorless. alpha lipoic acid easily soluble in benzene, ethanol, ethyl ether, chloroform and other organic solvents. Alpha lipoic acid almost insoluble in water, the water solubility: 1 g/L (20 ℃), soluble in 10% NaOH solution.
